Penn State grads turn the tassels - Local | Centre Daily Times ...

By the time the weekend ends, 12,000 Penn State degrees will have been awarded across the state, including the university’s milestone 700,000th degree, 150 years after its first 11 were bestowed in 1861.

For many students, graduation weekend represented a welcome end to the stresses of schoolwork and a break before tackling the daunting challenges of making it in the world beyond college.

Bill Nechamkin, who graduated Saturday with a degree in information sciences and technology, has two months off before he started a job in a rotational program at Verizon.

“I’m excited for my future but sad to be leaving Penn State behind,” he said.

There was to be no break for Kerri Smyth, a graduate in civil engineering, Spanish and international studies. She planned to leave today for a monthlong trip to China with her college roommate, whose parents are from China.

“We’ll just be traveling, doing touristy things,” Smyth said.

After that, Smyth will enter the Peace Corps in South or Central America.

“I always felt like I should put all the blessings I had towards something good,” she said.

Anjana Sinha, an immunology student, was to be similarly busy as she prepared to start a job at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. She was enjoying her weekend, as two carloads of friends and relatives had come from her home in Hopewell Valley, N.J., to watch her graduate.

Katyln Palmer wasn’t even afforded the luxury of a relaxing graduation. As the marshal for the College of the Liberal Arts, the German studies major had to attend a luncheon honoring her, with the head of her department and her adviser on her senior thesis, an 86- page tome — in German — on ethical dilemmas during the Holocaust.

“I spent a lot of time in the library,” Palmer said of her time at Penn State.

The honor of college marshal signified Palmer had graduated first in her class of 1,500 students. Palmer, a Tipton native, praised the study abroad opportunities the university had allowed her, which included time in Cape Town, South Africa, and in Liepzig, Germany. She plans to enter a program next year that would send her back to South Africa and Germany, as well as to India.

“Developing awareness of other cultures and lifestyles helps to make a better world,” she said.

Her adviser, Martina Kolb, had high praise for Palmer.
