Are we there yet?

"Uh oh, now I'm the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it."

In just 74 characters the Abbottabad blogger now famous online for tweeting about the Osama bin Laden raid without realising it until the next day, summed up the mindset of the internet right now.

Like some kind of postmodern fantasy, the story right now is about how famous a guy can become via social media after recognising he is about to become famous via social media for being the guy who tweeted about another story without realising it. Phew!

It's about a world so entranced by the changes it is going through it can't stop going back for another glance in the mirror. Then another and another.

The climate in which Sohaib Athar became a web sensation in a few hours is symbolic of a unique and fascinating period in our history.

With a recent spate of natural disasters across the world, instability sweeping across the Middle East and, most recently, the Royal Wedding and the death of Osama bin Laden, one narrative has cut across every story: how the internet reacted.

With every global event, the voices on Twitter and Facebook grow and the classic metaphor of the hive mind becomes more apt. Bin Laden's death sparked a flurry of activity, hitting peaks of up to 5000 tweets a second and trouncing the peak of 3966 tweets a second seen during Friday's Royal Wedding.

It is increasingly apparent that people no longer want to only be told a story. They want to be a part of its incarnation. They want to watch it break and turn from rumour to fact, discuss it with the rest of the world, analyse and satirise.

With every earthquake, tornado or civilian uprising, there is a story like Mr Athar's - the person who was in the right (or sometimes wrong) place at the right time with an internet connection and a desire to share.

Far from fears this will knock traditional media off its perch, mainstream media organisations are (mostly) embracing change and using social media to great advantage. The realisation has dawned that trying to ignore or work against social media is like erecting a picket fence against a tidal wave.

Through social media, newsrooms can inform discussion. Stories that were once talked about around the breakfast table are now shared, liked and commented on via Facebook, generating hits to websites which translate into advertising dollars for newsrooms.

As a news gathering tool, it's priceless. For online reporters and news editors, there are countless occasions where pictures and videos arrive on Twitter, Facebook or YouTube well before news of the latest natural disaster or civil uprising hits traditional news wire services. First-hand accounts are online in seconds. And these accounts are rarely a static quote, rather a live stream of status updates painting a picture as news unfolds.
