Hall of Fame for golf is par excellence
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — In 40 years covering golf for the Sun-Times, I witnessed lots of great competitions and played many of the country’s top courses. But it was only recently that I paid a long overdue visit to the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Located in the World Golf Village resort on the outskirts of Jacksonville, Fla., the Hall of Fame is a must for the avid golfer. It even has some appeal for non-golfers.
More than 100 of the game’s top stars have been inducted since the Hall opened in 1998. More inductees will be added Monday as a kickoff to The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in nearby Ponte Vedra, Fla. Ernie Els, Doug Ford, the late Jock Hutchison, Masashi “Jumbo” Ozaki and former President George H.W. Bush will be honored at the public ceremony.
Unlike halls of fame in other sports, this isn’t simply a shrine celebrating the careers of playing greats like Gene Sarazen, Bobby Jones, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. This one goes much deeper than that. No single star player dominates the presentation.
If there is an individual who serves as a focal point, it’s the legendary comedian Bob Hope. He was just a duffer — like most of us — but no one loved the game more than Hope did. His name has been on a PGA Tour tournament staged annually in California. That’s his official connection to golf. He also used the sport in various ways as an entertainer, and that brought worldwide attention to the game.
That’s why the Hall created a special exhibit, “Bob Hope: Shanks for the Memories,” in 2008. It amounts to a tribute to Hope’s life, not just his affection for golf. The exhibit includes 400-plus items, 300 vintage photographs and two hours of videos that stir fond memories of Hope’s career.
The Hall functions as a museum that tells the rich history of a sport enjoyed around the world.
The clubs and balls used in the 1800s start the evolution in equipment that has become quite high-tech in recent years. Unlike baseball, football, basketball and hockey, golf has roots that reach far beyond North America. Variations of golf were played around the world as early as the 1500s.
The sport we know today dates to Scotland in the mid-1800s. Exhibits from that era include a life-size picture of “Young” Tom Morris, generally acknowledged as golf’s first superstar. Morris won all the big tournaments before dying at the young age of 24.
