Summer of sequels: 'Harry Potter' finishing up, while other series go on

Summer movie season is here again, as consistent, predictable and irresistible as the rise in temperature. It's the time when the big movie studios try to make as much money from overheated vacationers as possible, in preparation for leaner seasons ahead. Everything is bigger -- budgets, stars, explosions -- in the summer.

Just don't look for many Oscar contenders or subtle, introspective dramas. But if you're ready for blockbusters packed with enough explosions to blow giant plot holes in not only themselves, but nearby romantic comedies, you won't be disappointed.

Of course, the sequels will get top billing: "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" (Friday), "The Hangover Part II" (May 26), "Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom" (May 26), "Cars 2" (June 24), "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" (July 1), and, of course, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" (July 17).

It's certainly possible that there will be some high-quality breakout hits, like last year's "Inception." "Super 8" (June 6) from J.J. Abrams ("Lost," "Fringe"), about a group of high schoolers who witness a train wreck, and something mysterious and terrible that escapes from it, has potential, and a co-producer in Steven Spielberg who knows how to do these kinds of things. "Larry Crowne" (July 1), a drama about the recession-induced struggles of middle-class America starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, might have enough star-wattage to sell a tough subject.

Also, look for superheroes to save the day all summer -- "X-Men: First Class" (June 3), "Green Lantern" (June 17), and "Captain America: The First Avenger" (July 22).
