Jay Shipley, 60, is vice president at Bob Buescher Homes.

Community and leadership involvement: Shipley has been active with the Home Builders Association of Fort Wayne and the Indiana Builders Association. He attends Leadership Fort Wayne events regularly and is past member of the Leadership Fort Wayne Alumni Association Board. He was a volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, a founding director of the Boys & Girls Club of Fort Wayne and a past board member and past president of the Three Rivers Festival. Currently, he is a member of the Upstate Alliance of Realtors and affiliated with Northeastern Group Realty, a residential real estate company. He recently participated in a mission trip to Cuba through Pathway Community Church and did some construction consulting and visited other churches while there.

Most recent accomplishment: He received Builder of the Year honors for 2010 from the local Home Builders. “The builder of the year was quite an honor, but I think actually serving as the president (of the association) for the 2010 year was the accomplishment more than the award,” said Shipley, noting the still-challenging economy and housing industry.

What makes a leader: “I think it’s a person focused on transforming something for the better and then (the ability) to develop the potential of others around them to that end,” he said.

Leadership traits you most value: “I think it’s emotional intelligence; what I’ve read in various leadership books – everything from self awareness and motivation, empathy skills. Those things that are more or less tough to define contribute to leadership and maybe even self regulation and self control.”

Best leadership book you’ve read: “There’s no question on the book,” Shipley said. “Beyond Success-The 15 Secrets to Effective Leadership and Life Based on Legendary Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success.”

Best ways to overcome self-doubt: The first step, he said, is to recognize self-doubt and admit the fears so you can seek solutions. “I make a list of the doubt I have and start building the support network to work on eliminating that doubt,” Shipley said. “And, most importantly, I’ve always sought to eliminate negative people from my sphere because I think that can feed self doubt. What I always tell kids is you can’t belabor it.
