Duo's artistic creations are wowing customers
Renata and Balazs Hazi met and fell in love over cake while working in a Hungarian confectionary shop over ten years ago.
And it's a career which taken them all the way from their home country to a new enterprise in the rural confines of South Roscommon.
The couple, who are both pastry chiefs, run www.noveltycake.ie , a business specialising in designer cakes for all occasions from their beautiful home in Curramore, Kiltoom. A quick perusal of their workshop and website leaves you in no doubt of the artistry of Renata's handiwork, everything from smurfs to a dog, to Peppa the Pig and family to intricate wedding styles are brought to life in amazing sculpted cakes and cupcakes designed to bring the wow effect to any occasion.
"I think it's getting more popular for people to order a special cake for all kinds of celebrations," Balazs, who is known as Kevin here in Ireland, observes. Renata interjects that she wants people to get away from buying just a cake, she describes their confectionary as like a present, something special for the person tailored to their individual taste.
"I try to do what a client wants and most times I can," Renata, whose father was an artist, enthuses of the intricate, patient work of her sugary creations which also extend to gorgeous cup cakes for occasions like hen parties, birthdays and christenings.
People really want personalised cakes, Renata says, adding one particular man wanted a cake modelled on his motorbike helmet with his own individual designs which took three days to complete. Another recent one she remembers for a keen hunter, featured him and his Irish Red Setter and pointer dog, a difficult design to master she smiles, but it worked well.
"You have to meet the client's expectations or go beyond that," Kevin comments, as Renata nods in agreement. Admitting she always gets a little nervous making wedding cakes, she said everything is worth it when she receives favourable comments from a bride or groom, or sees the look on a child's face when they open the box and see their birthday cake for the first time in open-mouthed amazement.
