Local man returning old sword to Germany

A White County resident has begun the process of returning an almost 100-year-old sword to its home in Germany.

Rich Gurka of rural White County purchased the sword at an auction in southern Illinois some time ago. His research led him to donate the sword to an organization that will eventually lead to the piece being presented to a civic club in its hometown, and hopefully the family of the former owner, in Recklinghausen-Sud, Germany.

According to Gurka, the sword is a jawless lionhead example having a typical p-guard handle with crossed cannons on the obverse langet. The handle has oak leaf motif, an iron cross and crossed flags engraved on the handguard and reverse langet. The single fuller blade is plated and is etched with the inscription "Burger Schutzengilde, Recklinghausen-Sud 1913." The scabbard is a common plated variety, having surface deterioration from poor storage.

"This piece has a number of condition issues from the passage of time," said Gurka. "The double wire wrapped handle has cracked and has a few pieces missing. It was probably stored in a barn or unventilated attic for decades. Yet, these and other issues do not detract from the significance of the sword."

"Schutzengilde" means "shooting club" and is a centuries-old tradition in Germany, he said. Town festivals and history revolve around these activities. When soldiers were mustered out of service to the king, they returned home and organized into local, well-armed militias for the safety of their homelands.
